Fieldwalking

Fieldwalking is an important archaeological prospecting and evaluation tool used chiefly on arable land in rural areas.  It involves the systematic collection of artefacts from the surface of fields that have been cultivated and weathered (ie the surface the ploughsoil has broken down). Plotting the distribution of finds can assist in assessing the archaeological potential of a site and for targeting further investigation.

Fieldwalking is an extremely popular methodology for voluntary and community groups wishing to undertake local archaeological fieldwork.

We can help with all types of archaeological evaluation

APS are experienced in the systematic collection and precise plotting of artefacts during fieldwalking.  Their analysis can aid potential identification of buried sites which can help with further fieldwork and mitigation.
