It is with great sadness that we report the tragic death of our friend and colleague David Hopkins. David drowned following a boating accident in September 2011 whilst on a working holiday in Uzbekistan.

The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has commissioned Archaeological Project Services to organise a community archaeological excavation at Willow Tree Fen near Bourne. Volunteers will be able to have a go at excavating a Romano-British salt making site during the two week excavation, starting on Tuesday 20th September. Open days will be held on Saturday 24th September, Sunday 25th September and Saturday 1st October.

The first example of a Roman cemetery plot for the historic town of Sleaford has been uncovered during construction work on a new affordable housing development, archaeologists have confirmed.

In conjunction with our parent company, Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire, along with JS Arts and 600 Whiskies Unplugged, we are undertaking a second Day of Folk Music, Song and Dance on August 7th 2011 centred round the George Hotel at Leadenham.

On the day we present exponents of Lincolnshire’s traditional and recent folk song and dance who will undertake performances and workshops on various aspects of the county’s musical heritage.

Tom Lane of APS and Grimsby musician Dick Appleton have written the songs featured in the ‘docu-musical’ radio programme describing the events surrounding the hanging of Priscilla Biggadike at Lincoln Castle in 1868 which will be transmitted on BBC Lincolnshire on May 2nd.

Prehistoric Artwork

APS is working with Sleaford-based instrument makers Bridge Violins to create a design for a specially commissioned fiddle. The instrument is being made for Ian Cutler, best known as the young fiddle player in the 1973 cult classic film The Wicker Man.
Ian requires a fiddle with some built-in artwork and we are looking at prehistoric designs found on metalwork in Lincolnshire to create the arty effect required.

Archaeology Outreach Officer

Katie Green has joined APS to train as an Archaeology Outreach Officer through an IfA Learning Bursary. So far she has been involved in a variety of community projects at different stages, from funding applications through to community excavations. As her training develops she hopes to increase her profile in the community and become an active member.

In November APS were pleased to learn that they had been commissioned to undertaken a community excavation project at Marton Village near Gainsborough. However, due to the bad weather in November and early December the project was cancelled.

APS were commissioned to undertake an integrated archaeological and landscape study of Lincolnshire's coastal grazing marshes. Part of the project gathered reminisces of local inhabitants, which revealed some fascinating insights about life in the Grazing Marshes area, excerpts of which can be heard here.

South Holland District Council commissioned APS to write a book exploring the history and landscape development of the area and the resulting volume, "Wide Horizons" details the unique landscape which gives South Holland and its inhabitants a distinctive 'sense of place'.

Anne Boyle is undertaking a national survey of pottery studies on behalf of the Medieval Pottery Research Group. This English Heritage funded project includes a resource assessment and consultation with pottery specialists working throughout the UK.
