Prior to joining APS in 1997, Denise worked extensively in England and Scotland directing large-scale excavations and post-excavation projects. Her experienced covers a wide variety of sites of all periods. During her time at APS Denise has been a scheduling consultant on behalf of English Heritage and worked on the development phase of a community based project to survey the condition of heritage assets across Lincolnshire.
As a senior member of the project management team Denise is responsible for the day to day management and administration of all aspects of the organization. In addition she is involved in producing Environment Impact Assessments and Mitigation Strategies for development schemes.

Project Manager

Steve has worked in archaeology for over 20 years, largely in the East Midlands and east of England (although recent projects have taken him as far afield as Cornwall and Kent) and has been part of the Project Management team at APS since 2000.
Steve has directed many excavations, including those on the new museum site in the city of Lincoln and the excavation, recording and removal of the Roman mosaic found there (now on display in the completed museum). Steve has specialist knowledge of the Roman period with publications including a monograph based on his PhD research on the Roman legions and a volume on recent discoveries in Roman Lincolnshire.
Particular expertise in GIS systems including analysis and use of Lidar data in topographic mapping. Responsibilities also include implementation and management of geophysical surveys.

Project Manager

Gary, one of the Project Management team, has been involved in professional archaeology since 1980. Before arriving in Lincolnshire in 1993 Gary worked widely across England, notably in Manchester, the West Midlands and Worcester.
At APS Gary has a special responsibility for building recording and supervises that sector of the organisation. He has carried out surveys of large and important buildings, including the Angel and Royal Hotel in Grantham. Gary has a particular interest in clay tobacco pipes and as well as analysing and reporting on pipe assemblages for APS he also examines collections made by other archaeological organisations.

Project Manager

Dale has worked continuously in Lincolnshire since 1992, starting as an excavator and working up to his current management position. Among the larger projects managed by Dale are the excavations undertaken in advance of the A1073 Spalding to Eye road realignment during 2008 and also those in advance of housing development at Wygate Park, Spalding in 2005.
After working on the Fenland Management Project for several years Dale has acquired an in depth knowledge of the archaeology of this area and has contributed to a number of academic publications on the archaeology of the Fenland. Dale has specialist interest in prehistoric ceramics and has written or contributed to several reports on the pottery from sites in central Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire.

Roman Ceramic Specialist

Alex carries out assessment and analysis of ceramic assemblages dating from the late Iron Age to the 5th century AD. He works on pottery and ceramic building material from across the region and has a particular interest in the pottery of the Late Roman period. Alex joined APS in 2009 as a trainee Roman ceramicist funded by an Institute for Archaeologists training bursary and has remained with the organisation since completion. He is an active member of the Study Group for Roman Pottery and sits on the group’s governing committee.
Alex studied Archaeology at undergraduate level before going on to read for an MA in Roman archaeology at the University of Leicester, graduating in 2004. His dissertation focussed on the distribution of pottery and other traded materials to military sites in 4th century Britain.
Recent projects include the development of a regional ceramic type series for the Southern Lincolnshire area and the assessment of a large group of material from a Heritage Lottery funded community archaeology project at Fishtoft near Boston.

Senior Project Officer

Following his degree at the Institute of Archaeology Paul worked his way round the country on the 'digging circuit', gaining valuable experience on excavations of all periods. Much of the early work was as an environmentalist, a specialism that Paul maintains to this day.
After a spell in India training local archaeologists he moved to Lincolnshire and APS in 1993, since when he has directed a large number of excavations. A prolific report writer Paul has recently completed monographs on the Car Dyke and the Middle Saxon settlement at Fishtoft, near Boston.
Paul's chief research interest is in Saxon and medieval monasticism, although he is also partial to landscape surveys and has undertaken extensive surveys of woodland in south Lincolnshire and the massive and detailed Sempringham Priory survey for English Heritage.

Network Administrator

Mark began working in field archaeology in 1984. Before settling in Lincolnshire and APS in 1991 Mark excavated in various parts of Britain for several different archaeological organisations. Mark spent eleven years at APS supervising fieldwork and undertaking post excavation.
In 2002 he became IT Network Administrator with responsibility for maintaining the company’s IT infrastructure which he has since developed so that APS now manages nearly all IT tasks in-house. Mark also has experience using total station and GPS field surveying and CAD.

Andrew began working in archaeology in 2000 and since that time has either been studying the subject at University or working forArchaeological Project Services. Andrew started as a volunteer at APS before heading to the University of Wales, Lampeter, where he received a first class degree and won full Arts and Humanities Research Council funding to complete a Masters degree at the University of Manchester. After this he received the University of Manchester scholarship for a PHD which he intends to complete in the future.
During his time at University, Andrew worked for APS in the summers and in the intervening years between degrees. Currently he has been a full time APS employee since 2006. His main areas of interest encompass the interpretive aspects of late British prehistory with a specific emphasis on the Neolithic and Bronze Age.
Andrew's duties at APS include the direction of archaeological sites, supervision of archaeological fieldwork, archaeological surveying using GPS equipment and the production of reports including post-excavation analysis and CAD illustration.

After volunteering on various excavations from 1995 onward, Vicky studied Archaeology at the University of Bradford, graduating in 2001. During her degree she volunteered for Greater Manchester Archaeology Unit and worked on the National Trust's Sites and Monuments Record.
Since joining APS in 2001, Vicky has worked her way up from an Excavator and now directs a wide variety of field and post excavation projects. Vicky now also undertakes much of APS’ building recording work. A detailed and thorough researcher, Vicky has authored numerous client reports and has a number of publications to her credit, including her work on the Oakham Bypass in Rutland.

After obtaining a geography degree at Newcastle and working briefly in the natural history section at New Walk Museum, Leicester, Mark began excavating in 1983. Since than he has gained extensive excavation experience working on sites of all types throughout Britain.
From 1987 Mark worked predominantly in Winchester and Essex, from where he came to APS in 2003. In addition to his rural and urban excavating skills Mark has also undertaken building recording and industrial archaeology. Apart from his excavating Mark undertakes post excavation and has authored many reports, several of which have been published.

Archivist

After graduating Sarah pursued a career in Arts Administration and Marketing while taking archaeological evening classes and undertaking training excavations in the holidays.
In 2002 Sarah volunteered at APS as a finds processor and in 2003 became the company’s Archivist.
Sarah organises all the documents that are produced on site during fieldwork in a set index, liaising with the finds team to ensure the correct finds and documents go together and with the landowner and curators to agree that everything goes to the appropriate museum in a condition that meets their required archive format.

Finds Supervisor

Denise has worked in archaeology since 1988 working country-wide on sites ranging from pre-historic to post medieval. Having started work with APS in 1991 as a site assistant Denise became Finds Supervisor in 1993.
Denise’s responsibilities include the cleaning, marking and cataloguing of finds, liaising with internal and external specialists and creating the final archive for deposition at various museums.

After completing her degree in History at Sheffield University, Susan started working in archaeology in 1991. During the 1990’s at Archaeological Project Services, Susan worked on all of the Fenland Management Project excavations and was responsible for the compilation of the database and digital archive for the project during the post-excavation phase.
Since 1995, Susan has designed and typeset a range of APS publications and publicity material, including booklets, leaflets, newsletters and the monographs of the Lincolnshire Archaeology and Heritage Report Series.

Supervisor

Following graduation in English and Landscape Archaeology at the University of East Anglia Chris began his digging career on a medieval site in France in 1992.
Returning home to the Fens Chris began the first of four spells with his local unit, APS. In between he has worked on major urban excavations in London, the Sutton Hoo cemetery in Suffolk and for Units in Wales, Bedfordshire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.
His current spell with APS started in 2000 since when he has undertaken fieldwork on sites across the country. Chris is one of the APS surveying team with an interest in GPS.

Illustrator

As you all may have heard David tragically died on the 25th September 2011 while on a working holdiday in Uzbekistan.
A friend and valued colleague David will be much missed by all who knew him and his work both here and abroad.
Our full time illustrator since 1996, - David’s work covered the whole range of finds, pottery, plans, maps and reconstructions in black and white and in colour. His reconstructions brought to life vividly scenes from the past and his work in that sphere was much in demand.
David has produced reconstructions of a Tudor hunting lodge at Lyveden New Bield, on behalf of the National Trust and illustrations for Barlings Abbey Research Project for English Heritage. David also taught illustration in Lincolnshire and at Birkbeck College, London.
When not in Lincolnshire he illustrated on projects abroad, including Turkey, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Syria, Uzbekistan, Bahrain and many trips to Libya. His work has appeared in APS reports, public display boards, local journals and overseas publications.
David’s considerable reputation attracted work from numerous other archaeological organisations. A popular figure David often attendsed Outreach events where his teaching skills came to the fore.

Following a 32 year police career in Lincolnshire, Bob undertook voluntary excavation work with APS and the Trent and Peak Archaeology Unit, before joining the APS staff roster in 2002.
A graduate of the Open University, he has also completed a 2-year Certificate of Higher Education in Archaeology at the Nottingham University School of Continuing Education, where he was awarded a distinction.
Bob has worked on a variety of field excavation projects including both urban and rural sites. His particular research interests are British prehistory and Roman settlement.

Jonathon has worked in archaeology since 2005. Following early years spent working on industrial archaeology and major infrastructure projects he joined APS in 2007. In addition to his work in the excavation team Jon also operates the in-house environmental lab, processing samples taken from site.
Along with Steve Malone Jon also undertakes our geophysical surveys. An excellent photographer, Jon’s academic interest lies in the early Bronze Age and with prehistoric artwork. Jonathon has now started to undertake post excavation analyses and writes small reports on watching briefs and small sites.

Using administrative and financial skills honed during a long and successful career in banking Barbara brings a semblance of order and calm to the busy APS office.
Following her work in the financial sector, including foreign banking, Barbara joined APS in 2000, since when she has devised or developed many of the office administrative systems, overseeing their implementation and use, as well as supporting the Project Managers in their day to day tasks.

Community Outreach Officer

Katie joined APS in 2010 to train as a Community Outreach Officer through funding provided by the Institute for Archaeologists Learning Bursary.
Katie studies archaeology at the University of Bradford, completing a BSc in Archaeology in 2009. During her placement year which was spent as a site assistant with a commercial archaeological field unit she became heavily involved in community archaeology which influenced her undergraduate dissertation entitled; "Community Archaeologists Digging Test Pits – What is the Benefit?”
Katie then went on to study for an MSc in Environmental Management at the University of Loughborough which she completed in September 2010 before joining APS in November.
